1. GSLIS SPOTLIGHT

Tilley presents, publishes on comics history research

Assistant Professor Carol Tilley will deliver a keynote address at the 2014 Comics & Medicine Conference in Baltimore on June 27. In her address titled, "Private Reading, Public Health: Exploring Psychiatrist Fredric Wertham's Comics Legacy," she will discuss her research on the psychiatrist and anti-comics critic whose 1954 book Seduction of the Innocent inspired federal hearings that decimated the comic book industry. Tilley will also speak on comics and comics history at other upcoming events, and she recently published an article titled, "Comics: A Once-Missed Opportunity," in the Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults.

Ludäscher joins GSLIS faculty

GSLIS is pleased to announce that Professor Bertram Ludäscher will join our faculty in Fall 2014. Ludäscher is a leading figure in data and knowledge management, focusing on the modeling, design, and optimization of scientific workflows as well as provenance, data integration, and knowledge representation. He will also have an appointment at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and an affiliate appointment at the Department of Computer Science.

Hoiem joins GSLIS faculty

This fall GSLIS will welcome Elizabeth Hoiem as an assistant professor. She will teach and conduct research in youth services. Specifically, Hoiem explores the history of technological innovations in children's literaturefrom early children's books and toys to contemporary applications of digital pedagogyand looks at modern technology through a historical lens.

Library Research Seminar VI

Be an engaged librarian! 4. ALUMNI and ADVANCEMENT HIGHLIGHTS

GSLIS students launch InfoBlitz blog

Students of Publishing as an Information Profession have launched their blog, InfoBlitz. Alumni are invited to visit the blog, which features posts on a variety of topics of interest to LIS professionals, and to contribute content. Posts include editorials, commentary on current issues in the field, and reports on field experiences, lectures, and conferences.

GSLIS Annual Fund Fiscal Year End

June 30 is the end of FY14. Please take a moment to send in your Annual Fund gift if you have not yet done so. The LIS Annual Fund is the only source of discretionary support for GSLIS students, faculty, and staff needs or emergencies. Please visit our secure Giving web page to make your gift online or mail your check to GSLIS Advancement, 501 East Daniel Street, Champaign, IL 61820, with the intent of your gift noted.

Without the support of our alumni and friends we would not be able to maintain the quality of our program.

Each year the faculty and staff at GSLIS run their own campaign to give financial support to our School. Thanks to our campaign leadersAmani Ayad, academic professional, Sally Eakin, staff, and Mike Twidale, facultyour campaign was a success. Support staff led the way with 55% participation, followed closely by faculty with 45% and academic professionals with 35%.

We want to thank our faculty and staff for not only their daily assistance and support, but also those who made a financial commitment as well. You are the best!

Campus-community partnership launches new maker-in-residence program

A new program co-led by the Champaign-Urbana Community (CUC) Fab Lab aims to bridge and enhance the creative capabilities of local maker communities. The Champaign County Community (CCC) Maker-in-Residence Program was recently awarded a $29,293 grant through the Campus-Community Compact to Accelerate Social Justice initiative in the Office of Public Engagement.

Kato joins recruitment and admission team

Todd Kato joined the iSchool on January 29 as a senior admissions and records manager. In this position, he will develop and implement innovative programs and processes for admission and records management across all the School's degree programs.

Cross joins the Research Services team

Julia Cross joined the iSchool in January as a research development coordinator. In her position, she supports faculty during different stages of the research process, helps identify funding sources and pair researchers with specific solicitations, monitors compliance with different research protocols, and provides support to programs such as Scholars in Residence, research fellowships, and the student research experience.
